The Balinese create beautiful ceremonial abjects from young coconut leaves which are trimmed and held together with bamboo pins. Sunlight shines on some canang, a refined Balinese world for the betel chew, which are offering trays containing flowers, shreded leaves, and betel chow. They are placed on a banana leaf base upon an open stone shrine. Rice grains on a small leaf square, jotan or saiban, are offered daily to the invisible forces of the cosmos before people are allowed to eat. The rich variety of textures, incredibly fine details, and super realism have more soul than could be shown in a photograph.
